Bike helmets for big heads

If the L is always too tight, you are not imagining it: only 37 of the 53 helmets we track reach 62 cm (24.4 in) or beyond. Here they are, biggest first.

The 37 helmets that reach 62 cm or more

Biggest first. The size shown is each model's largest, and the range next to it is what that size actually covers — not the model's full range.

Why this is so hard

Most helmet ranges stop at 61 or 62 cm, because the shell mould gets expensive and the volume is small. The result is familiar to anyone with a big head: the “L” is too tight, the shop says to try a different brand, and nobody can tell you which one. Of the 53 helmets we track, only 37 reach 62 cm and fewer still go past 64.

Two things worth knowing. First, brands that use one wide adjustable size (Bell's “Universal XL”, Giro's “Universal Adult”) often reach further than lettered ranges do. Second, a helmet at the very top of its range will sit high on your head no matter how much you tighten the dial — if you are at 64-65 cm, aim for a model whose range ends above you, not at you.

Enter your exact measurement and we will show only what fits — and flag anything that only just fits.
